Moving home can be a grueling task, largely thanks to having to pack. If you have a lot of stuff, it can take a long time to try and get it all packed up. You have to try and do it in between your other commitments, and it can be slow work. You need to pack everything safely and make sure it will all survive the journey to your new home. There are some tricks that everyone should try to keep in mind so that they get the job done to their satisfaction. If you remain organized when you pack, it will all be much easier. Here are some tips on packing.
Prepare Your Packing Supplies
Before you start packing, make sure you have everything you need. There are several supplies you might find useful while packing. Firstly, you need some receptacles to pack everything into. Most people use cardboard boxes, as well as various other items, such as suitcases for clothes. However, you might want to use other boxes that you can reuse for storage or your next move. You will also need plenty of tape to seal your cardboard boxes, as well as packing materials such as bubble wrap, paper, and packaging peanuts. Don’t forget to have something to label your boxes too. You could write on them or use a color-coding system.
Pack One Room at a Time
You should start to pack as soon as you can, and do it one room at a time. You don’t want to have each room half-packed, so you can’t find anything. Begin with the rooms that are least necessary. Start by packing up everything in your guest bedroom and other rooms you don’t use frequently. Your kitchen and bathroom might be some of the last rooms you pack up. As you’re packing, label your boxes.
Get Rid of Clutter
There’s no point moving junk from one house to the next one. If it’s just going to sit in boxes when you arrive, you might as well get rid of it. If you have fewer things to move, you can save time and money. There are several ways you could declutter your home. Hold a yard sale to get people to come and buy your things, or donate stuff to charity. Some things can also be recycled, or perhaps just thrown away.
Protect Everything Fragile or Valuable
You don’t want to break anything important in the move, so take steps to protect everything. You should wrap items like glasses and crockery individually, using bubble wrap or paper. It’s important to pack everything securely into boxes, so it doesn’t move around. Use packing paper, newspaper, rags, or anything you have to fill gaps in boxes.
Don’t just throw things into boxes when you can take a more organized approach. Firstly, don’t exceed the weight limit for your boxes. You don’t want the bottom to fall out or for the seams to start ripping. Also, pack heavier items into the bottom of a box before you start putting lighter things in.
Stay as organized as possible when you’re packing, and the job will be done sooner. It will also be easier to unpack once you arrive at your destination.
