Moving can be incredibly stressful — but it doesn’t have to be! When homeowners take the time to slow down, get organized, and hire help, moving can be a more seamless, easy experience.
The Murphy Moving & Storage team has been making moves easier on our customers for over 100 years. With that kind of experience, it’s safe to say that we have seen anything and everything. We’re taking this wealth of knowledge and helping you better plan for your upcoming move! Here are a few easy ways to get a head start on your moving prep:
Hire a Moving Team
Firstly, it is crucial to find a team of trustworthy movers who have plenty of experience and offer the services you need. The Murphy crew will help you throughout each stage of your move, beginning with an in-home survey that provides you with an estimated quote. You will have the opportunity to discuss our services and your individual needs.
Our services include:
- Packing and crating, apartment moves
- Storage solutions
- Moves down the street, across state lines, or abroad!
No matter the size of your move, we will help plan and execute the day of to help you feel prepared. But before that day arrives, there are things that you as the homeowner must take care of.
Create To-Do Lists
Lists will be your best friend throughout the moving process. They will help you stay organized and are an excellent way to keep the whole family aware of what needs to be done.
In the months and weeks leading up to your move, a list of things to do will keep you motivated and on schedule. Add to this list items like:
- Clean out the garage
- Pack up kid’s rooms
- Cancel utility bills
- Set up mail forwarding
We also recommend creating a “morning of” list with items that need to be done first thing on the day of your move. This could include last-minute items to pack, a reminder to take the garbage out, or even taking a moment as a family to enjoy your last moments in your home together.
Keeping track of to-do’s on paper will help your family and movers understand what needs to be done and make for a smoother moving day.
The Night Before
The night before the big day, it’s time to check those lists and add any last-minute tasks. Be sure to have a separate box or bag of personal items like pajamas, a change of clothes, toiletries, phone chargers, and medications that you can take directly to your new home with you.
Set aside these and other items you do not want the movers to touch. Label these items accordingly in order to avoid any mix-ups!
If you have children or pets, you may have arranged for them to be watched by family or friends while the movers are working the next day. Confirm these plans and finalize details of drop-offs and pick-ups.
Moving Day
The day is finally here! Throw on comfortable clothes and shoes and take care of any last-minute tasks before the movers arrive. Bring your children or pets to their sitters with plenty of time to get back home to greet your movers.
Once our team arrives, we’ll discuss how the day will look, and go over any final details before getting to work!
As we finish up, it is time to:
- Clean
- Take out the trash
- Review and sign paperwork
- Do a final survey of the home, turning off lights and locking doors
- Load personal items into your vehicle
And off you go to your new home with the Murphy team and your belongings right along with you!
